Note From The Author
There is the Great Pretender—
but I am not that.
In truth, I’m mediocre at best.
My alter ego is out there every day:
pretending to know what to say to my real kids after a hard day,
pretending to be strong for my real wife when life gets hard,
pretending to have it all together at work,
playing the part like a child in a game.
But here—
here, ink is the conduit of creation.
Even in its digital form, it channels the imagination.
Not to be confused with reality,
but with ink a stamp of permanence in perception—
and extracts a version of the self that can’t be dismissed as just pretend.
The version of yourself that hides while we pretend to have it all together..
And now, here you are—at my dwelling—
to escape yourself.
To lay down the alter ego that must battle the monsters in the office,
break the bad news to your loved ones,
and endure the insurgency of reality
we are at times unprepared to fight.
